The Sopranos creator David Chase said he wants to develop a new film or series idea about Italian Americans. According to Variety, Chase shared the idea at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival.

The project idea centers on Italian Americans who, amid uncertain conditions back home, head to Italy for cheap housing. Chase said he wants to tell a story of unexpected encounters and cultural tensions through four characters returning to the old country.

The director and writer also said he’s been thinking about reuniting with four actors from the cast of Not Fade Away for the idea. The list includes John Magaro, Jack Huston, Will Brill and Bella Heathcote.

Not Fade Away followed teenagers forming a rock band in 1960s suburban New Jersey. David Chase‘s new idea has the potential to revisit the same generational and identity questions through a more contemporary lens of migration.

Chase‘s name also came up last year in connection with Project: MKUltra, developed for HBO. The new Italy project still appears to be in an early conceptual stage, but it carries the possibility of a post-Sopranos narrative returning to themes of identity, belonging and family.
