Yazar The live-action remake of Moana is making headlines ahead of release with box office expectations. According to industry data reported by Variety, the Disney film is heading toward an opening in the $60-65 million range across 3,875 theaters in North America.
That projection trails some of the studio’s higher-profile live-action adaptations in recent years, but it’s drawing attention given the film’s scale. The production’s budget — excluding global marketing — is said to sit around $250 million, while the international opening is expected to land in the $70-75 million range.
Directed by Thomas Kail, the film stars Catherine Laga’aia as Moana, with Dwayne Johnson returning as Maui. The 2016 animated film grossed $680 million worldwide, while Moana 2 posted an even bigger breakout, crossing the $1 billion mark.
The picture is murkier across the live-action catalog. Films like Lilo & Stitch, The Lion King and Beauty and the Beast opened north of $100 million, while Dumbo and Snow White settled for more modest starts.
The real test for the Moana remake won’t be just the opening weekend, but how well family audiences carry the film through the summer. For Disney, strong brand recognition is an advantage, while the high budget stands out as the main factor making its box office performance more delicate.
