According to a Variety exclusive, David Howard Thornton, known for playing Art the Clown in the Terrifier series, has joined the cast of Behind the Mask II: The Return of Leslie Vernon. The actor is said to take on a key role in the film.
Behind the Mask II: The Return of Leslie Vernon will serve as a sequel to the 2006 cult mockumentary Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon. The project reunites director Scott Glosserman with writer David J. Stieve.
Nathan Baesel and Angela Goethals will also return for the sequel. The story picks up 20 years after the original film and follows Leslie Vernon’s transformation within a changed horror-movie landscape.
According to the official synopsis, the film will build a horror universe where classic genre rules collide with the modern slasher wave, viral killers, legacy sequels and the internet era’s bloody icons. Glosserman said Thornton is one of the defining faces of the modern slasher era, and that the casting would pit “old guard against new blood.”
After Terrifier, Thornton played Steamboat Willie in the 2025 film Screamboat. The actor will also return as Art the Clown for Terrifier 4, which has yet to receive a release date.
Production on Behind the Mask II: The Return of Leslie Vernon is expected to begin in the fall. The film is moving forward after a crowdfunding campaign that raised more than $400,000.
