Yazar Digital film platform Mubi has acquired the worldwide rights to Making Marie Antoinette, a documentary directed by the late Eleanor Coppola. The documentary chronicles the making of Sofia Coppola‘s Oscar-winning 2006 film Marie Antoinette through footage shot by Eleanor Coppola.
Marking the 20th anniversary of Marie Antoinette‘s release and to fulfill her mother’s wish, Sofia Coppola assembled previously unseen footage her mother had shot. The edit was handled by Aaron Matthews, with contributions from Eleanor Coppola‘s close friends Davia Nelson and Liz Bird.
In the documentary, Oscar-nominated actress Diane Lane voices Eleanor Coppola, reading passages from Eleanor’s on-set journals to reflect the director’s experiences and her relationship with her daughter.
Sofia Coppola said, “We started going through my mom’s footage during the pandemic. Turning what she shot into a feature-length documentary was always her wish.” The director noted that revisiting Eleanor’s material — as both a filmmaker and a mother on set — was deeply moving for her.
Mubi, which has taken on the rights to the production, announced it will unveil release plans soon. Eleanor Coppola was previously known for Hearts of Darkness, a documentary about her husband Francis Ford Coppola‘s filming of Apocalypse Now.
