Yazar Backlash is growing against Sony‘s decision to end physical disc production for new PlayStation games in January 2028. According to Insider Gaming, a petition launched against the decision, titled “Don’t Kill the Disc,” reached 100,000 signatures in just four days and continues to climb rapidly.
The petition emerged after the official PlayStation account shared links on July 1 announcing that new games would no longer be printed on disc starting in 2028. Shortly after the decision, a representative of the Canadian retail platform PnP Games launched the petition on Change.org.
Titled “Don’t Kill the Disc,” the petition pushed its signature count to nearly 200,000 following the initial report, with roughly five percent of supporters also leaving comments or videos in support of the campaign. The text emphasizes that a disc is “a real, owned game” that can be lent, traded and passed down to future generations.
The petition argues that the issue isn’t just about preserving games, but also about the jobs supported by physical media. Signatories say they aren’t entirely opposed to digital formats, but object to that choice being imposed on them.
The latest update also recalls a promise Sony made in 2013: the company had pledged at the time that players would be able to keep their games forever. The petition argues that promise has increasingly eroded amid digital gaming’s irreversible rise.
