Yazar Moana, the new live-action adaptation of one of Disney‘s beloved animated classics, held its world premiere Tuesday night at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles. First reactions to the film quickly surfaced on social media following the screening. The film opens in theaters on July 10, 2026.
Directed by Thomas Kail, Moana sees Dwayne Johnson return as the demigod Maui. Catherine Laga’aia, making her feature debut with this film, takes on the role of the adventurous princess Moana, previously voiced by Auli’i Cravalho in the 2016 animated film.
Jared Bush, who wrote the 2016 Moana and the 2024 film Moana 2, co-wrote the new film’s screenplay with Dana Ledoux Miller. Composer Mark Mancina and songwriter Lin-Manuel Miranda, both behind the original film’s beloved music, also returned for the project.
The new Moana is the latest entry in Disney‘s long-running series of live-action remakes of its animated classics. The studio has previously brought Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, The Lion King, The Little Mermaid and, most recently, Lilo & Stitch to the big screen.
Early reactions on social media after the premiere paint a mixed picture; while some viewers are questioning how much the adaptation adds to the original, the discussion is also fueling a broader conversation about Disney’s remake strategy. The film’s box office performance will be closely watched in that light.
