Yazar Oscar-winning Polish director Paweł Pawlikowski‘s latest film Fatherland will open the 32nd Sarajevo Film Festival. The director will attend the gala screening on August 14.
Fatherland had its world premiere at Cannes this year, winning Pawlikowski the Best Director award. The film follows an emotional road trip taken by writer Thomas Mann and his daughter Erika Mann through a Germany in ruins at the height of the Cold War in the summer of 1949. Sandra Hüller stars in the lead role.
Pawlikowski‘s relationship with the Sarajevo Film Festival goes back decades. The director’s 1992 documentary Serbian Epics screened in the festival’s early years, while his film Cold War opened the 24th Sarajevo Film Festival. In 2019, he received the festival’s Honorary Heart of Sarajevo award.
Pawlikowski began his career with acclaimed documentaries before moving into narrative filmmaking with BAFTA-winning films like Last Resort (2000) and My Summer of Love (2004). His 2013 film Ida became the first Polish film to win the Oscar for Best International Feature.
His 2018 film Cold War won Best Director at Cannes and earned three Oscar nominations. Woven through with history and conflict, Fatherland‘s resonance with themes still alive in Bosnia’s collective memory makes it a fitting opening choice for Sarajevo.
